Photo2Fuel Final Meeting & Conference: Wrapping Up Three Years of Innovation

Discover the highlights of the Photo2Fuel Final Meeting & Conference in Seville, marking three years of Horizon Europe research to turn CO₂ into fuels and chemicals.

Photo2fuel team final conference

On 5–6 August 2025, the Photo2Fuel consortium came together in Seville, Spain, to mark the culmination of three years of research under the Horizon Europe programme. The two-day event included the project’s final consortium meeting and the much-anticipated Photo2Fuel Final Conference, where results, challenges, and future perspectives were shared with both project partners and a broader audience.

Day 1 – Final Consortium Meeting
Hosted by our project coordinator IDENER, the first day brought all partners together for the final project meeting. This was an opportunity to review the last phase of work, exchange insights, and align on the project’s closing activities.
Key discussions included:

  • Upscaling experiments led by University of Amsterdam (UVA, showcasing progress towards bringing Photo2Fuel technology closer to real-world application.
  • Results from the techno-economic assessment conducted by ETH Zürich, evaluating the feasibility and competitiveness of the technology.
  • The newly developed Decision Support System (DSS) by IDENER, designed to help guide technology deployment and strategic decision-making.

The meeting reflected the strong collaboration within the consortium, with each partner’s expertise contributing to the project’s holistic approach to turning CO₂ into valuable fuels and chemicals using solar energy.

Day 2 – Photo2Fuel Final Conference
On 6 August, the consortium opened its doors to external researchers and industry representatives for the Photo2Fuel Final Conference. The programme featured insightful presentations from project partners and invited speakers, covering topics from biohybrid system optimisation to sustainability assessments, and more. The event also fostered connections with sister projects, encouraging knowledge exchange and collaboration across the European carbon utilisation community.

Looking Ahead
While the project officially concludes by the end of August 2025, the knowledge, tools, and relationships developed over the past three years will continue to inspire new research and applications.
